The area has a significant Cham Muslim population, descendants of the ancient Cham kingdom that flourished in central Vietnam before being conquered by the Vietnamese in the 15th century. The Cham community suffered disproportionately under the Khmer Rouge who targeted them specifically. Wat Maha Leap built entirely of timber without a single nail survived the Khmer Rouge period. |
