History of Svay Rieng
Svay Rieng's Parrot's Beak region is one of the most strategically significant geographic features in modern Cambodian and Vietnamese history. During the Vietnam War North Vietnamese forces used the region extensively for supply routes and base camps leading to American and South Vietnamese military operations including the controversial 1970 invasion. The province suffered enormous civilian casualties. Today Svay Rieng is an important economic zone with significant cross-border trade at Bavet.
