History of Preah Sihanouk
The city of Sihanoukville was built almost from scratch in 1955 after Cambodia's independence as the country needed its own deep-water port following the loss of Saigon as a trading outlet. Named after King Norodom Sihanouk, the city grew rapidly. The offshore islands remain some of Cambodia's most pristine and beautiful destinations.
