History of Oddar Meanchey

Oddar Meanchey was separated from Siem Reap Province and established as a new province in 2000. The province contains Anlong Veng, the final stronghold of the Khmer Rouge leadership including Pol Pot, Ta Mok, and Nuon Chea. Pol Pot died here in 1998 and was cremated on a pyre of tyres. The area has become a dark-history tourism destination offering sobering insight into one of the 20th century's most brutal regimes.
