History of Kratie

Kratie was an important trading post along the Mekong during the Khmer Empire and French colonial rule. Its beautiful colonial waterfront buildings date from the early 20th century. The Mekong River dolphins now survive in only a small stretch near Kratie making the province a vital conservation area. The region north of Kratie was among the last to come under government control with Khmer Rouge presence persisting until the late 1990s.
