History of Koh Kong

Koh Kong remained one of Cambodia's most isolated provinces well into the modern era, accessible for decades only by boat or through Thailand. The Cardamom Mountains provided a natural fortress for Khmer Rouge holdouts who did not surrender until 1998. This isolation preserved remarkable biodiversity. The province gained road access in the 2000s opening it to ecotourism.
