History of Kandal

Kandal Province surrounds Phnom Penh and holds Udong which served as Cambodia's royal capital from the early 17th century until 1866 when the capital moved to Phnom Penh. Koh Dach Silk Island has been producing some of Cambodia's finest silk for centuries. Kandal was deeply affected by the Khmer Rouge years as it borders the capital and witnessed mass evacuations.
