History of Kampot

Kampot was one of Cambodia's most important ports during the colonial era serving as a major export hub for pepper, dried fish, and goods. The French built Bokor Hill Station in the 1920s as a mountain retreat and its abandoned casino and church remain hauntingly beautiful today. Kampot pepper was traded globally as far back as the 13th century. The town fell under Khmer Rouge control and suffered greatly but has rebuilt as one of Cambodia's most charming destinations.
