History of Kampong Chhnang

The name Kampong Chhnang means Port of Pottery in Khmer, reflecting a pottery tradition over a thousand years old. The province sits along the Tonle Sap River and its communities have adapted to the dramatic seasonal flooding of the Tonle Sap Lake. During the Khmer Rouge period the traditional potters were suppressed but the craft survived and continues in villages near the provincial capital.
