History of Battambang

Founded in the 11th century and under Thai control from 1795 to 1907 before being returned to Cambodia under French mediation. During the French colonial period Battambang became a major center of commerce and its colonial-era architecture still lines the riverfront. The city suffered greatly under the Khmer Rouge but its resilient artistic community has made it one of Cambodia's most vibrant provincial centers.
