History of Banteay Meanchey

Banteay Meanchey means Fortress of Victory in Khmer. Established as a province in 1988. The region was a significant battleground during the Cambodian civil war, with Khmer Rouge forces holding parts of the border area until the late 1990s. Banteay Chhmar temple, built by Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century, is one of Cambodia's largest Angkorian temples. Today the province is a key economic gateway between Cambodia and Thailand.
